- Mount Semeru Erupts, Ejects 400 Meters of Ash
Surabaya – Mount Semeru is still erupting at 05.02 WIB. This time it was observed emitting ash approximately 400 meters above the peak of roughly 4,076 meters above sea level Tuesday (6/12/2022).
The ash column was observed to be white to gray with moderate to thick intensity to the south and southwest. This eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 23 mm and a duration of 73 seconds.
“The volcano is visible. It is observed that smoke from the main crater is white with light to medium-high intensity, about 100-300 meters from the summit,” said PVMBG Officer Mukdas Sofian in his statement.
However, residents are advised not to carry out any activity in the southeastern sector along Besuk Kobokan, 17 km from the peak (the eruption center). Outside this distance, the community only carries out activities 500 meters from the riverbank (river border) along Besuk Kobokan.
“Because there is still the potential to be hit by an expansion of hot clouds and lava flows up to a distance of 19 KM from the summit,” he added.
Be aware of the potential for hot cloud avalanches (APG), lava avalanches, and lava along rivers/valleys that disgorge at the top of Mount Semeru, especially along Besuk Kobokan, Besuk Bang, Besuk Kembar, and Besuk Sat as well as the potential for lava in small rivers which is a tributary of Besuk Kobokan.
Previously, Monday (5/12/2022) at 21.50 WIB, the peak of Mount Semeru was observed to emit incandescent lava, which glowed reddishly. This scene was captured on the CCTV camera at the Semeru Monitoring Post belonging to BPBD.
In the photo taken from the Semeru CCTV camera footage belonging to the BPBD and distributed on social media, hot clouds are still billowing.
Until now, Mount Semeru is at the level of activity Level IV or Caution even though volcanic activity subsided after the eruption on Sunday (4/12/2022).

- US F-35B Stealth Fighter Jet Damaged after Landing in Japan, Aircraft Nose Kisses Ground
OKINAWA – A United States Marine Corps (US) F-35B stealth fighter jet was damaged after an emergency landing at Kadena Air Base, Okinawa, Japan, on Thursday.
The landing gear failed, causing the fighter’s nose to hit the ground.
1st Marine Aircraft Wing spokesman Major Rob Martins, in a statement to Stars and Stripes, said that suspected electrical problems prompted the pilots to land the F-35B Lightning II.
According to him, the aircraft assigned to VMFA-121 at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni at Kadena Air Base did not experience an incident until around 1:40 p.m.
Kadena Air Base is home to the Air Force’s 18th Wing. According to Martins, when the fifth-generation fighter was pulled into the flight path, the front landing gear malfunctioned, and the nose of the plane fell to the ground.
He said the incident did not cause any casualties. Meanwhile, a video broadcast by NHK on Twitter showed the F-35B pulling up to the taxiway with its nose down.
“The pilot did as he was trained and chose the safest option, safely landing the aircraft according to standard procedures,” Martins said in a statement launched Friday (2/12/2022).
“Operating our aircraft safely and effectively is a top priority, and our pilots take the utmost care to ensure the safety of the flight crew and surrounding areas.”
The fighter jet, Martins said, was conducting standard training operations within local range at the time of the incident. After the plane landed, it was surrounded by fire engines and emergency vehicles.
It was unclear what the extent of the damage was to the fighter.” will be carried out,” Martins said. The military defines accidents by class from A to D.
Class A accidents involve a repair cost of over $2 million or the death or permanent disability of a member of service.
Class D accidents cost $25,000 to $59,999 in property damage. And injuries ranging from requiring first aid to a day’s absence from work. The
U.S. Marine Corps had three Class A accidents in manned aircraft in 2022, according to data on the Naval Safety Command website.
A spokesman for the Okinawa Bureau of Defense, an offshoot of The Japanese Defense Ministry, told Kam in the evening that it knows “the nose of the F35 hits the ground” but is still waiting for details.
A spokesperson for the Okinawa Prefectural Military Bases Affairs Division said it was waiting for information from the defense bureau. Governor Denny Tamaki has yet to comment publicly on the incident.
The short takeoff, vertical landing variant of the fighter, has been plagued by high costs and technical problems from its inception.
