The area of Nagan Kidul, Patehan, Kraton, Jogja City was rocked by a tragedy at the Beteng Keraton revitalization project, which claimed lives and injured a worker. Now, the police have revealed the tragic chronology of work accidents that occurred on this project.

According to the Head of Public Relations of the Jogja Police, AKP Sujarwo, the accident started with building contractors, Marlam and Teguh Soko, who intended to buy a dismantled house belonging to Sudaryanto. Both of them are buyers of used house demolitions who are looking to make a profit from the used wood or frames.

“On May 1 2024, Marlam and Teguh went to Sudaryanto’s house to buy the dismantled house for IDR 2,500,000,” said Sujarwo. After an agreement on the price was reached, the two of them summoned builders, including the two victims, to carry out the demolition.

The next day, the group of victims began carrying out the demolition according to Marlam and Teguh’s orders. Unfortunately, when the two victims were on the ground floor, the top of the building suddenly collapsed, hitting them. “It is suspected that because he did not pay attention to the strength of the top floor cast, it collapsed onto the two victims, causing one to be injured and one to die at the scene,” explained Sujarwo.

Police conducted a crime scene investigation to collect further evidence and information. As a result of this accident, Sencaki Mahendra Wijayanto from Magelang suffered injuries to the sole of his left foot, while Maryono, a resident of Sleman, died. Both were taken to Bhayangkara Hospital for further treatment.

Head of Jogja City BPBD, Nurhidayat, explained that the incident occurred at 08.55 WIB when the two victims were working to dismantle the building. The construction suddenly collapses and falls on them. “This was a work accident, a construction worker. One of them died and the other was injured. Both were taken to Bhayangkara Hospital,” he added.

This tragedy is in the spotlight in the midst of the Beteng Keraton revitalization project, highlighting the importance of work safety and security at construction sites. The public also demands that relevant parties ensure strict safety standards to prevent similar accidents in the future.
