Pertamina Refinery in Dumai Explodes, 9 Workers Injured

PADANG, KOMPAS — Pertamina’s oil refinery in Dumai City, Riau, exploded and caught fire on Saturday (1/4/2023) night. Nine workers were injured, and several residents’ buildings were slightly damaged due to this incident.

The explosion occurred in the refinery gas compressor area owned by PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional (KPI) Refinery Unit (RU) Dumai at 10:54 p.m. The incident has been handled, and now the officers are turning to recover the refinery and the affected residents.

“PT KPI RU Dumai apologizes for this incident. We will be responsible for the losses in the community,” said Agustiawan, Area Manager Communication, Relations & CSR RU Dumai Subholding Refining & Petrochemical PT KPI, in a written statement Sunday (2/4/2023).

As a result of this incident, said Agustiawan, nine workers in the operator’s room were injured by broken glass. After being treated at the Pertamina Dumai Hospital, they all returned to their homes.

In addition, he continued that several residents’ houses and houses of worship around the refinery were also slightly damaged. PT KPI RU Dumai will immediately deal with the damage to these buildings.

According to Agustiawan, his party has not yet been able to conclude what triggered the explosion. “Currently, the investigation process is being carried out. The cause of the incident is still under investigation,” he said.

He explained PT KPI RU Dumai was forming a recovery team involving local government, law enforcement, and community representatives to accelerate recovery. Residents’ losses were recorded, and a medical team was also provided to check the health of residents.

“We also ensure that the national fuel stocks, especially the northern part of Sumatra, are safe. Hopefully, the recovery process can run well so that the refinery’s operational conditions can run optimally in the next few days,” he said.

The Mayor of Dumai Paisal, who directly checked the condition of the field, stated that the condition of the refinery was under control. A team to collect data on residents’ losses has been formed, consisting of representatives from the community, the government, law enforcement officials, and Pertamina. “Pertamina has also stated that it will be responsible for the impacts that arise,” said Paisal.
