Explanation of Bina Kasih Medan Hospital on Alleged Malpractice of Children of TNI Members

A doctor at Medan’s Bina Kasih Hospital, HP, was reported to the North Sumatra Police for alleged malpractice. The reporting party was a TNI member, Serka Holmes Sitompul, a Bukit Barisan Military Command member.

Director of Operations at Bina Kasih Hospital, Rita Ginting, opened up about the alleged malpractice. But he was reluctant to talk much about the case.

“Later, just coordinate with the medical service department for this preparation,” said Rita Saturday (15/7/2023).

He confirmed that Holmes’ child, RSS, had been treated at Bina Kasih Hospital. After undergoing surgery, he said RSS was referred to RSUP Adam Malik.

Meanwhile, Dr. HP, who underwent the surgical procedure, admitted that he had indeed operated on RSS’s hand. But he denied having committed malpractice or medical negligence.

“First, it’s not medical negligence, but complications or risks. Second, maybe at the time of the accident, he (RSS) had a blood vessel rupture and was only found out after surgery,” he said.

“So, in my opinion (decay occurred because), before the operation, there was a ruptured blood vessel in the area around the elbow. It was only discovered after two days of surgery,” he said.

The malpractice allegation began when Holmes’ child, RSS, who was 6 years old, fell and broke his hand. The Kodam I/BB personnel took RSS to Bina Kasih Hospital.

“My child fell and suffered a fracture in his right hand, above the elbow,” Holmes told detikSumatra, Saturday (15/7/2023).

After undergoing a series of treatments, Dr. HP, an orthopedic specialist at the hospital, performed a surgical procedure. The operation process was carried out on Friday, May 19.

The operation lasted about two hours. Then, he was called to enter the post-surgery recovery room. He claimed to have seen his son being penned.

“I asked Dr. HP whether the RSS would be disabled. But he said no, and the RSS would be normal as before,” he said.

A few hours later, he found his son screaming, complaining of pain in the genitals because the catheter had been placed.

“At that time, we asked that the catheter be opened. The nurse didn’t want to. Because we insisted, the catheter was finally opened. Our child’s genitals were rotting due to that,” he said.

A few hours later, Holmes continued. RSS screamed again in pain, this time in the hand operated on. He asked the nurse to open the bandages. However, the nurse refused.

The next day, he saw his son’s finger getting stiff, pale, and swollen. He returned to report it to the nurse. Then the nurse and doctor on duty came to check.

“The nurse opened the bandage and squeezed RSS’s hand so that the pus was removed from the surgical incision, which was already festering,” he explained.

“Lastly, my child’s wound became so severe that he wanted amputation. But we didn’t accept it and have held the doctor accountable until now,” he concluded.

Departing from this problem, Holmes reported the doctor to the North Sumatra Police. This was marked by report number: STTLP/B/840/VII/2023/SPKT/Polda North Sumatra on Saturday (15/7).

He reported the crime of health worker crimes against Law Number 36 of 2014 concerning Health Workers Article 84.
