In this article, we summarize some of the shocking events that have occurred recently, as well as examine efforts that can be taken to prevent similar tragedies in the future. Let’s explore further to understand the impact of these incidents and the mitigation measures that need to be strengthened.
Tatelu Mine Tragedy, Three Miners Killed, Mine Owner Becomes Suspect
A heartbreaking tragedy occurred at the Tatelu gold mine, North Minahasa Regency, North Sulawesi, on Friday (6/12). Three miners died trapped in a mine shaft which was suddenly submerged in water due to heavy rain.
This incident started when Taufiq Popalo (26), Edwin Kawengian (38), and Ofke Watulingas (44) were digging a mining hole about 40 meters deep. Bad weather with heavy rain makes conditions in mine holes vulnerable. At around 16.00 WITA, water suddenly flooded the mine hole, trapping the three miners inside.
Unfruitful Rescue Efforts
The victim’s colleagues initially tried to pump water from the hole using a simple pump. However, the swift water made this effort futile. The situation became increasingly critical until they decided to report this incident to the Dimembe Police, which then forwarded it to Basarnas Manado.
“The first victim was found dead on Sunday (8/12),” said Nuriadin Gumelang, Public Relations of Basarnas Manado. Two other victims were only found on Monday (9/12), but unfortunately, they were also dead.
Mine Owner Becomes Suspect
This tragedy triggered an in-depth investigation by the police. Head of Criminal Investigation Unit for North Minahasa Police, AKP Ferdian Martadinata, confirmed that the owner of the mining pit had been named a suspect. “The mine owner is suspected of being negligent because he did not provide adequate safety measures for the workers,” he said.
The incident at the Tatelu mine is a reminder of how important work safety standards are, especially in the high-risk mining sector. This incident also adds to the long list of tragedies in community mining which are often characterized by a lack of supervision and regulation.
Hopefully this incident will be an important lesson so that similar incidents do not happen again in the future. For the victim’s family, the people of North Minahasa and its surroundings feel deep sorrow.

TKA Work Accident in Kendal Industrial Area, Tragically Killed by 2 Tons of Iron Plate Due to Loose Crane Rope
Kendal was again shaken by sad news. A foreign worker (TKA) from China, Wu Yang (29), died in a work accident in the Kendal Industrial Area (KIK), Wonorejo Village, Kaliwungu District. This tragedy occurred on Sunday (8/12/2024) when Wu Yang was crushed by a two-ton steel landing plate due to a loose crane rope.
Chronology of Deadly Incidents
According to information from Kendal Police Criminal Investigation Unit Head, AKP Rizky Ari Budianto, Wu Yang was on duty directing the removal of the landing iron plate using a crane. The plates were moved from the pile of material to a transport truck at the PT BTR location.
“The victim was standing on the truck while directing the position of the iron landing plate which weighed around 2 tons. When the crane started lifting the plate, suddenly the crane hook hole broke and the hook rope came loose,” said Rizky on Monday (9/12).
The falling iron plate directly hit Wu Yang’s head and body, causing him to die on the spot. In the video circulating on social media, the tragic moment looks real, where Wu Yang appears to be focused on directing the crane before the incident occurred.
Police Steps
Kendal Police immediately carried out a crime scene investigation (TKP) after receiving the incident report. A number of witnesses, including the crane operator, assistant, driver and truck attendant, have been questioned.
“The victim’s body has been taken to the Suwondo Kendal Regional Hospital mortuary for further processing,” added Rizky.
Warning of the Importance of Work Safety
This accident is a bitter reminder of the importance of implementing work safety procedures, especially in heavy industrial project environments. Work risks involving heavy equipment such as cranes require close supervision and regular equipment inspections to prevent similar tragedies.
Wu Yang, who was known as a tenacious worker on the project, is now gone. This incident caused deep sorrow, not only for the victim’s family in China, but also for colleagues in the Kendal Industrial Area.
Messages of Condolence and Hope
It is hoped that this tragedy will be a valuable lesson for all parties. Work safety must be a top priority in all sectors, especially those involving heavy equipment and hazardous materials.

PT Anugerah Abadi Magelang Garment Factory was engulfed in flames, clothing production ready to be shipped was destroyed by fire
A large fire incident hit the PT Anugerah Abadi Magelang (AAM) garment factory on Sunday (8/12/2024). The incident that occurred in the industrial area burned the clothes produced that were supposed to be sent the next day.
Head of the Magelang Police Criminal Investigation Unit, Commissioner Muhammad Fachrur Rozi, confirmed that the fire was reported at around 12.15 WIB. As of Sunday afternoon, management could not confirm the number of clothes lost in this fire.
“The production results are ready to be sent tomorrow. However, we cannot confirm the number yet,” said Rozi when giving information at the scene.
Even though this incident caused significant material losses, Rozi emphasized that there were no injuries or fatalities because the factory was on operational holiday over the weekend.
Fire extinguishing lasted five hours
Head of the Magelang Regency Fire Management Technical Implementation Unit, Edy Priyanta, stated that the blackout lasted until 17.00 WIB, almost five hours after the fire was reported.
“The main difficulty is the long distance to the water source. “Even though heavy rain fell, it didn’t really help the extinguishing process,” said Edy.
A total of 13 fire engines from Magelang Regency and three additional units from Magelang City were deployed to extinguish the fire. However, until the afternoon, plumes of smoke were still visible in the factory area even though the intensity had reduced.
Process the crime scene and wait for the cooling process
The police cannot process the crime scene (TKP) until the fire is completely extinguished and the cooling process is complete.
“At this time we cannot confirm the cause of the fire. “The crime scene investigation will only be carried out once the situation permits,” Rozi added.
This incident is a reminder of the importance of fire risk prevention and mitigation measures, especially in industrial areas that produce goods on a large scale.
Even though material losses are estimated to be very significant, PT AAM management has not provided official information regarding the value of the losses and the impact on the company’s future operations.

The New Friends Ship Sinks in Ketapang Waters, Five Victims Still Missing After Three Days of Searching
The tragedy of the sinking of the ship New Friend occurred in Gosong Aling Waters, Ketapang Regency, on Tuesday, December 3 2024. The 23 meter long green wooden ship sank while carrying a load of fertilizer. However, news about this incident was only reported to the SAR Team on Friday, December 6 2024, after extreme weather occurred which was thought to be the main cause of the accident.
The Coordinator of the Ketapang SAR Post, Ayub, revealed that even though the joint SAR team had carried out an intensive search for two full days, five people had still not been found. “Currently, we are still looking for five missing people, while two other people, Ardi and Ali, managed to survive,” said Ayub on Saturday evening.
Boat New Friend reportedly departed from Gresik with the destination Pangkal Balam, Pangkal Pinang. However, while crossing Ketapang waters, the ship sank, causing the five crew members to be swept away. The five victims who are still being searched for are Hawi, H. Par, Dulla, Zali and Rahman.
The search continues even though the direction of the sea currents is strong enough to make it possible that the victims were carried towards Central Kalimantan. “SAR parties in Central Kalimantan have also been deployed to assist in the search,” added Ayub. The SAR team hopes that the victim can be found soon even though the terrain they are facing is quite challenging.
This incident illustrates how important it is to be aware of extreme weather in waters that can be dangerous for shipping. It is hoped that the ongoing search will provide hope for the families of the victims who are still waiting for news.
