Glassware Shop Warehouse in Bondowoso Burns, Losses Reach IDR 100 Million
A major fire broke out at a glassware shop warehouse in Gerundu Hamlet, Lumutan Village, Botolinggo District, on Tuesday (17/12/2024) at 11.00 WIB. This incident caused the shop owner to suffer material losses estimated at IDR 100 million.
According to the Acting Head of the Bondowoso Satpol PP and Damkar Fire Department, Martanto, the fire occurred when the shop owner and his workers were carrying out their activities guarding the shop. “The owner and workers immediately left the shop when they saw the fire burning in the warehouse. Together with the residents, they tried to extinguish the fire with whatever equipment they had,” he said.
Unfortunately, the residents’ efforts were not enough to control the blaze which continued to grow, especially because the glassware and plastic materials in the warehouse were flammable. About 30 minutes after the report was received, three fire engines arrived at the location to help extinguish the fire.
“The extinguishing process was hampered because the materials in the warehouse accelerated the spread of the fire. After more than two hours, the fire was finally extinguished,” explained Martanto.
There were no injuries or fatalities in this incident. Based on initial suspicions, the fire was triggered by an electrical short circuit that occurred in the warehouse. The shop owner admitted that the fire was first seen emerging from the warehouse area before quickly spreading.
This incident is a reminder of the importance of better management of electrical installations, especially in areas that store flammable materials.

The ship, which was sailing from Surabaya to North Kalimantan, was reportedly split into two parts before finally sinking. The entire crew (ABK), 20 people, were successfully rescued. However, the captain, Tri Hernanto, until now it has not been found even though the search continues.
According to the Head of the Masalembo Class III Port Management Unit (UPP), Rahmat Rahim, the search for victims was hampered by bad weather. “Extreme weather is a big challenge for KPLP and SAR in continuing search efforts,” he said, Monday (16/12/2024).
Suspected Cause: Load Setup Error
This ship, owned by a shipping company based in Gresik, has become a matter of public discussion, especially because the incident was allegedly triggered by an error in arranging cargo. An officer who did not want to be named stated, “The unbalanced cargo arrangement was most likely the cause of the ship splitting. The load in the middle was lighter than the front and back, so the ship was vulnerable to breaking when hit by waves.”
Inspection Process Begins
Head of the Tanjung Perak Sea and Coast Guard Base (PPLP), Devi A. Mamesah, revealed that examinations of the surviving crew members would be carried out immediately after they arrived in Surabaya. “We are currently coordinating with agents and ship owners to develop an inspection timeline. The inspection is scheduled to start tomorrow,” he explained.
PPLP Tanjung Perak only acted as an assistant in the investigation process coordinated by UPP Masalembo. “We are assisting the Masalembo KUPP in examining this accident, but the final product remains their responsibility,” added Devi.
Unanswered Mysteries
The sinking of the MV Bahtera Mega is a reminder of the importance of proper cargo management, especially in dealing with extreme weather in Indonesian waters. It is hoped that the search for the captain and further investigations will provide definitive answers to this tragedy.
