Bondowoso Flash Floods: Location, Alleged Causes, and Damage Data
Jakarta – Flash floods hit Bondowoso, East Java. The natural disaster occurred last Sunday night.
East Java Governor Khofifah has also visited the Bondowoso flash flood site. As reported by detikJatim, the flash flood damaged dozens of houses. Here’s more information.
Bondowoso Flash Flood Point
The Bondowoso flood occurred in the Ijen District, Bondowoso, East Java. The flood hit residents’ housing until it was filled with wood material.
“That’s right. Here I am at the location,” said the Chief Executive of BPBD Bondowoso Dadan Kurniawan on Sunday (12/2/2023) evening.
Seconds of Bondowoso Flash Floods
Flash floods hit the Ijen area, Bondowoso. One resident described when the water mixed with mud and other materials suddenly hit the settlement.
“The water comes from overflowing rivers, then enters settlements,” said Sujono (56), a resident of Kalisat Village, Monday (13/2/2023) early morning.
He said if the river flow suddenly enlarged. The water immediately hit residents’ settlements, especially those near rivers.
“Water mixed with wood, bamboo, and other materials began to enter the settlement around 7 pm. Residents started to panic and run,” said Sujono.
When a flash flood occurs, the electricity in residents’ housing immediately goes out. Many residents then ran while trying to save themselves in pitch darkness.
“Yes, people are constantly panicking, running in the dark. Many have fallen. Hopefully, there will be no victims in this flood,” he explained.
Alleged Causes of Bondowoso Flash Floods
The worst flood conditions occurred in Kampung Baru, Kalisat. The river material of wood, bamboo, and other objects hit dozens of houses.
The material was carried away by the overflowing river. The flood is thought to have been caused by heavy rain since noon Sunday (12/2/2023), which occurred in the Mount Suket or Raung area.
Damage Data
Head of BPBD Bondowoso Dadan Kurniawan said that his party continued collecting data due to the Bondowoso flash floods. This flood had an impact on dozens of houses to public buildings.

BMKG Reveals Jayapura Earthquake Including Black Swan Earthquakes. What is it?
Jakarta, CNN Indonesia — The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) explained the series of earthquakes in Jayapura, including the black swan ones.
Based on BMKG data, from Thursday (2/2) to Sunday (12/2), Jayapura was shaken 1,181 times by earthquakes, with 176 being felt.
“Personally, in my opinion, the Jayapura Earthquake phenomenon includes ‘Black Swan Earthquakes,'” said the Head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Daryono, in a tweet on his Twitter account, Sunday (12/4).
“It has not been mapped with detailed sources, beyond experts’ predictions, the impact is damaging and makes people anxious, earthquake events are rare – rarely occur,” he continued.
Daryono revealed that the Jayapura earthquake, with a magnitude of 5.4, was similar to the Ambon earthquake, with a magnitude of 6.5 in September 2019.
“There are a lot of earthquake activities. They are destructive, a relatively rare phenomenon, not predicted by experts, and the source of the earthquake has not been mapped in detail.”
However, Daryono stated that the Jayapura earthquake series would be completed.
The Jayapura earthquake will be over. It happened in Ambon-Haruku at the end of 2019. As many as 2500 more earthquakes occurred. It was finished because the accumulated stress had been released.
Quoting the paper ‘How big, how bad, how often: are extreme events accounted for in modern seismic hazard analyses?’ by Ivan G. Wong (2013), the ‘black swan’ earthquake phenomenon has occurred in several areas.
“‘Black swan’ has become a catch-all term to describe an event that is surprising, has a major impact, and is often rationalized inappropriately,” he said, quoting Taleb (2010).
Wong gave an example of the M 9.2 earthquake in Sumatra (2004) and the M 9.0 earthquake in Tohoku-Oki, Japan (2011).
“Earthquakes can be considered as ‘extreme events’ or ‘black swans’ in terms of their size because, in the last 200 years, less than ten earthquakes have been M 9.0 or greater,” he explained.
The two earthquakes can also be considered extreme due to significant loss of life (200,000 and 20,000 deaths, respectively).

Not Short Circuit, Makassar Central Market Fire Scorched 931 Kiosks
MAKASSAR, KOMPAS.com – Based on the results of the Forensic Laboratory (Labfor) test, the Port KPPP Police stated that the Makassar Central Market caught fire because of an ‘open flame’ or open fire. This was emphasized by the Head of the Makassar Port KPPP Police, AKBP Yudi Frianto when confirmed Thursday (9/2/2023).
He admitted that he had just received the results of the South Sulawesi Regional Police Labfor related to the Central Market fire. “Two facts were revealed from the investigation results by the South Sulawesi Regional Police Laboratory. First, the fire appeared at kiosk number 39, selling children’s t-shirts owned by Ms. Rospina. The second cause of the fire was an open flame,” he said.
Yudi explained that open flames could come from cigarette butts, mosquito coils, or other ignition sources. However, no chemicals were found at the location of the fire, such as gasoline or other fuels. “So it’s not because of a short circuit but an open fire. We are still conducting an in-depth investigation regarding the fire.
He explained that we have examined 18 witnesses and will carry out further investigations,” he explained. Previously, it was reported as many as 931 stalls in Block B South of the Central Market were burned to the ground on Tuesday (27/12/2022) around 19.00 WITA.
The burning of the Central Market in the middle of heavy rain flushed Makassar City. At that time, the fire quickly spread to the stalls made of wood and zinc. In addition, most merchandise is made of textile materials.
Residents who saw the blaze tried to extinguish it while waiting for the Makassar City Fire Department (Damkar) to arrive. The fire was extinguished around 21.28 WITA after dozens of fleets were deployed.
