Work Accidents Happen Again at PT GNI, Safri: The Government Doesn’t Have the Guts to Reprimand Them

Another work accident hit the PT Gunbuster Nickel Industri (GNI) smelter factory in Bunta Village, Petasia District, North Morowali Regency, Central Sulawesi. Based on information received by the editorial team of Radar Celebes, this incident occurred on the morning of Monday (26/6/2023) at the Smelter 1 grinding facility.

One local worker reportedly died in this incident, while two foreign workers (TKA) from China were injured. Several other local workers are also currently undergoing treatment at a local hospital.

Muhammad Safri, Deputy Chairman of the North Morowali DPRD, responded to this incident with great regret. He criticized the attitude of PT GNI, which seemed not to have learned from its mistakes and seemed not to have taken steps to prevent similar incidents from happening again.

“This is concerning. Incidents of work accidents at PT GNI continue to occur without stopping. They seem reluctant to learn from mistakes and do not make any efforts to prevent similar incidents. Ignoring human life without any effort to stop it is absolutely unreasonable. ” he insisted.

Safri criticized PT GNI because he thought the company had ignored regulations and did not pay attention to the applicable guidelines. He considered that this company does not value the loss of workers’ lives.

“They have turned their eyes away from reality and have not implemented various government regulations according to the provisions. They consider the death of workers as a normal thing. They think that giving compensation or donations to orphanages is enough to solve the problem,” he said.

The North Morowali PKB DPC chairman also highlighted the government’s need for seriousness in dealing with problems at PT GNI. Safri even accused the government of not daring to take firm action against PT GNI because this company originates from China and is included in the National Strategic Project (PSN).

“It can be seen that the government is not serious about dealing with the problems at PT GNI. There have been many victims, but no real action has been taken. Do not let it happen because PT GNI is part of the National Strategic Project (PSN) and originates from China. “The government doesn’t dare to take action to control it,” said Safri.

Refrigerator short circuit triggers house fire in Ambarawa

A house in Rejoso Hamlet, Pojoksari Urban Village, Ambarawa District, Semarang Regency, Central Java, was hit by a fire due to an electric short circuit in a refrigerator. Head of Semarang Regency Satpol PP and Damkar, Anang Sukoco, confirmed this incident and stated that the fire occurred on Thursday (22/6/2023) around 14.00 WIB.

According to Anang, the cause of the fire is believed to be a short circuit in the cooling machine, which then sparked a fire and spread to the back of the house. Upon learning that there was a fire, the residents immediately worked together to put out the fire.

“When officers arrived at the location, the fire had been extinguished. Furthermore, cooling was carried out,” said Anang. He also informed me that three people inhabited the house.

Still, the losses incurred due to the fire cannot be ascertained in the calculation process. Anang also appealed to the public to always be vigilant and routinely check electrical installations to prevent short circuits that could cause fires.

Restaurants in Ubud Burn, Foreign Tourists Scatter

On Monday (26/6/2023) at around 18.45 WITA, a fire occurred at the Honey & Smoke Restaurant located in the Pertiwi Resort Hotel area, Jalan Raya Monkey Forest, Ubud, Gianyar Regency, Bali. The flames from the kitchen immediately spread and devoured several parts of the restaurant, causing the foreign tourists to panic and scatter.

Police Commissioner I Made Uder, Head of Ubud Police, revealed that this incident occurred when the chefs and restaurant employees prepared customer orders. Suddenly, they smelled smoke coming from a drainpipe in the kitchen. After the fire appeared, they immediately tried to extinguish it using a light fire extinguisher (apar).

The employees immediately secured the gas cylinders in the kitchen by moving them to a safe place. However, efforts to extinguish it were unsuccessful, and the fire continued to grow, even spreading to the bar room on the second floor.

Uder explained that the initial suspicion was that the fire started from sparks from the charcoal during the roasting process using a grill. Charcoal fires are difficult to control because of the high kitchen temperature. Furthermore, the smoke extractor (exhaust) also caught fire. The fire got out of control and resulted in burning electric cables, then spread to the bar building on the second floor.

To deal with this fire, four units of fire trucks (Damkar) were deployed to the scene, two of which came from the Ubud Fire Unit, while the other two were assistance from the Gianyar Damkar.

“Items that were burned included cooking utensils, coffee machines, electrical appliances and air conditioners, with an estimated loss of around IDR 1 billion. However, the restaurant was insured,” Uder added.

An Ice Truck Collided with a Sugar Cane Truck on the Jogja-Solo Klaten Road. The Driver Was Pinched

The traffic accident involving two trucks occurred on Jalan Jogja-Solo, Tegalmas Section, Jogonalan District, Klaten. A driver reportedly died after being pinned in the truck cabin.

Inspector Slamet Riyadi, Head of the Klaten Police Traffic Unit, confirmed that an accident resulted in the death of the ice truck driver. “That’s the information (the ice truck driver died). The chronology and causes are still under investigation,” said Slamet when asked for confirmation by detikJateng on Monday (26/6/2023).

The police are still conducting examinations and data collection on the victims and trucks involved in the accident. The evacuating victims consist of a team of firefighters (damkar).

“The accident involved a box truck loaded with polar ice, which hit the back of the sugar cane loader truck. The driver was pinned, his legs were pinched,” said Tri Hatmoko, personnel from the 1st team of the Klaten Regency Satpol PP Fire Department, to detikJateng.

The accident occurred in the early hours of the morning. An ice cube box truck with police number AD 9950 LA crashed into a sugarcane transport truck.

Tri explained that his party received the report and immediately headed to the scene to assist the evacuation process with officers from other agencies. The condition of the box truck was badly damaged, and the driver was pinned.

“The victim was crippled, so cutting the truck’s cabin was necessary. We used a metal cutting tool and finally opened it,” he explained.

The cabin-cutting process took about an hour due to heavy traffic.

“We didn’t face any other obstacles apart from limited tools because a jack was also needed to open the cabin. We worked closely with the police, assisted by PMI officers and volunteers,” added Tri.

One of the road users, Anwar, said the incident occurred at around 01.30 WIB. The two vehicles came from the east.

“I was on my way back to Klaten when suddenly this incident occurred. I immediately stopped and saw the victim, who seemed to have died,” Anwar explained to reporters.

“From the east (Solo) to the west (Jogja), everything is running normally. The box truck collided with the sugar cane truck, which stopped. Only the ice box truck driver was a victim while the sugarcane truck driver was not injured,” added Anwar, who, at the time of the incident, directly called the police, ambulance, and fire department.

As a result of the collision, the steering wheel of the box truck was severely damaged. Meanwhile, the sugarcane transport truck was not seriously damaged, although some sugar cane spilled onto the back of the car.

This accident is under investigation to determine the chronology and the exact cause. The police are still conducting further studies and collecting data on the victims and trucks involved in this incident.

The fire department (damkar) played a role in evacuating victims from the trapped truck cabin. During the rescue, metal-cutting tools were used to free the trapped driver. Even though the traffic was heavy then, the firefighter team completed the cutting process in about an hour.

The victims who have been evacuated will immediately be flown to Sentani Airport (Jayapura) to undergo the identification process by the Papua Police DVI (Disaster Victim Identification) Team. After the identification process, the victims’ bodies will be handed over to their families for burial.

This accident caused a traffic jam on Jalan Jogja-Solo, Tegalmas Section, Jogonalan District, Klaten. Police and other officers work hard to unravel congestion and direct traffic around the scene.

Until now, the exact cause of this accident is still under investigation. With this investigation, the factors that led to the accident can be identified so that preventive steps can be taken to prevent similar accidents.

2 Houses in Banjarmasin Burned, Residents Injured While Trying to Save Themselves

The morning fire on Monday (26/6/2023) on Jalan Ratu Zaleha, East Banjarmasin, Banjarmasin, and South Kalimantan (Kalsel) has scorched two houses. Head of the Banjarmasin Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Husni Thamrin, confirmed that one place was heavily damaged, while the other lightly damaged houses were empty.

Husni stated, “Two buildings were burnt, one suffered heavy damage, and the other suffered minor damage.” The firefighting team faced several difficulties in extinguishing the fire. Water sources at the scene were challenging to reach, and the type of wooden structures accelerated the spread of the fire.

“With a road width of about 5 meters, these wooden buildings make the fire quickly grow, and water supply is difficult,” said Husni. Regarding the cause of the fire, Husni submitted an investigation to the authorities to determine for sure.

Husni added that a family head occupied one burnt house with five family members. One of the family members, Siti Masnah, suffered burns while trying to save herself.

“When the fire broke out, Siti Masnah suffered burns while trying to save herself,” he added.

This event demonstrates the importance of fire prevention and disaster preparedness. The condition of houses made of flammable materials and limited water supply is challenging for firefighters.
