  1.         Landslide on Mount Geulis Allegedly Triggered Sumedang Flash Floods

Sumedang – A former landslide can be seen on Mount Geulis Hill, Sawahdadap Village, Sumedang Regency. The landslide is suspected to have been the trigger for flash floods accompanied by mud that hit residential areas.

“So when it rains with high intensity, it causes an avalanche on the hill of Mount Geulis, then the landslide carries mud and wood material, causing a blockage in the upper reaches of the river,” said Sumedang BPBD Chief Executive Atang Sutarno to detikJabar, Monday (19 /12/2022).

Atang continued, due to the blockage, the flow of water that continued to flow was accommodated above. Until over time the blockages were no longer strong enough to hold the volume and pressure of the water.

“The water flow, which was fully accommodated above, eventually broke down because it was no longer strong enough to withstand the water pressure, so that the water flow carrying material also crashed downstream,” he explained.

Atang said this was a temporary suspicion based on the results of a joint assessment between the parties involved.

“Yesterday we both assessed from various parties,” he said.

Atang added, currently the handling is still focused on normalizing the flow of the river and maintaining the safety of residents and refugees.

“We are now focusing on normalizing (the river) and saving residents, so we evacuate residents first,” he said.

As is known, hundreds of residents in Cisurupan Hamlet and Naringgul Hamlet, Sawahdadap Village, Cimanggung District, Sumedang Regency had to be evacuated due to flooding accompanied by mud that hit their settlements, Saturday (17/12/2022) afternoon.

Information was collected, the flood accompanied by mud that occurred was allegedly caused by a landslide from Mount Geulis Hill which was above the residents’ settlements. Fearing further flooding, hundreds of residents were forced to evacuate.

The cause of the Sumedang

Flash Floods The flood accompanied by mud that occurred in Cisurupan Village was allegedly caused by a landslide from Mount Geulis Hill which was above the residents’ settlement. Hundreds of residents were forced to evacuate for fear of further flooding.

“So when it rains with high intensity, it causes an avalanche on the hill of Mount Geulis, then the landslide carries mud and wood material, causing a blockage in the upstream of the river,” said Sumedang BPBD Chief Executive Atang Sutarno, Monday (19/12) /2022).

“The water flow, which was fully accommodated above, eventually broke down because it was no longer strong enough to withstand the water pressure, so that the water flow carrying material also crashed downstream,” he continued.

Victims Died: Mother and Child

Two victims were reported missing due to flooding in Cisurupan Hamlet, Sawahdadap Village, Cimanggung District, Sumedang, West Java. The joint SAR team managed to find both of them dead on Sunday (18/12/2022).

They are mother and child with the identities Dini (40) and Syifa (15). The joint SAR Team Search Coordinator, Nova Perdiana said the first victim to be evacuated by the joint SAR Team was Dini. Then, followed by the victim Syifa at 10.40 WIB.

Officers had quite a hard time carrying out the evacuation process because the two victims were found among the material and mounds of mud which were right in the middle of the river flow.

  1.         Severe Turbulence Hits Hawaiian Airlines Flights, 36 People Injured

KONTAN.CO.ID – HONOLULU. At least 36 people were injured, of which 11 were seriously injured, after a Hawaiian Airlines flight from Phoenix to Honolulu was hit by severe turbulence.

Quoting the BBC, one passenger said the shaking became so severe that they “floated” from their seats.

Twenty people were taken to a local hospital with injuries ranging from lacerations, bruises and loss of consciousness to head injuries.

A thunderstorm was reported in the area during the turbulence. On Monday, the US National Transportation Safety Board announced it was investigating the incident.

There are 278 passengers and 10 crew members on board the Airbus A330-200.

The incident on Flight HA35 occurred early Sunday, shortly before the plane landed at Honolulu’s Daniel K Inouye International Airport.

A statement from Hawaiian Airlines read:

“Medical treatment was provided to several guests and crew members at the airport for minor injuries, while several were quickly taken to local hospitals for further treatment.”

Of the people taken to hospital, around 17 passengers and three crew members. A 14-month-old baby and a teenager were among them.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, Hawaiian Airlines flight 35 reported turbulence at around 10:35 a.m. Hawaii Standard Time.

An 18-year-old college student on his way home for winter break was on a plane and said it felt like normal turbulence at first. Then the shaking rapidly increased.

“It felt like free fall,” Jacie Hayata-Ano told CNN, describing herself as being lifted from her seat with her seat belt on.

After the shaking was over, a crew member came through the loudspeaker system asking for trained medical or military personnel to assist the injured passengers, said Hayata-Ano, who was not injured.

“I’m grateful that someone stepped up and helped because some of the staff needed it,” he said. “Everyone pretty much helps each other out. They check each other and take things,” added Hayata-Ano.

The airline said it was carrying out a “thorough inspection of the aircraft” before returning the aircraft to service.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the incident.

  1.         Thai Military Continues Search for Warships Containing 33 Marines

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANGKOK — The Thai military deployed warships and helicopters to search for 33 marines who went missing on Monday (19/12/2022). A small warship corvette sank late Monday in the choppy waters of the Gulf of Thailand.

The battleship HTMS Sukhothai suffered engine failure and sank just before midnight about 20 nautical miles offshore. Three Navy ships and two helicopters were dispatched to find the missing military member off the coast of Prachuap Khiri Khan province, south of Bangkok.

The rescue mission in bad weather saved 73 of the 106 people on board. The remaining 33 people were forced to remain on the ship.

The Navy posted pictures and video footage on its Twitter account showing a group of personnel in orange vests on a black inflatable raft moving away from the ship in the dark as the waves rolled around it. It was not immediately clear how many rafts had been deployed.

Sukhothai is a US-built corvette in use since 1987. Navy spokesman Admiral Pogkrong Monthardpalin said the ship encountered strong waves at the weekend, causing it to tip over to one side before being flooded.

An image shared by the Navy shows the gray ship capsized on its side. Another image on the scanner screen showed the ship’s bow and gun turrets poking out of the water as it sank.
