Two Fishing Boats Reportedly Burned at Belawan Ocean Port Due to Electrical Short Circuit, Losing Billions of Rupiah

On Sunday night (1/10/2023), two fishing vessels at the Samudera Belawan Fishing Harbor, Medan City, North Sumatra, experienced a severe fire. It is suspected that this fire was caused by an electrical short circuit in the ship’s engine. Firefighters struggled to extinguish the fire as the vessels were full of fuel.

The fire quickly spread and burned two fishing boats anchored at Abadi Jaya Pier in the Belawan Ocean Fishing Port Area. Although local fishermen tried to help using fire poison and seawater, the fire was difficult to extinguish.

Eight fire engines from the Medan City Government were deployed to the location. Still, they had to refill water repeatedly because the ships had just been refueled for sailing, making the fire difficult to control.

Head of Bagan Deli Village, Azwar Rivai Siregar, revealed that the fire was first seen at around 18.00 WIB when the two ships, which had just been filled with fuel, were preparing to leave. It is suspected that a spark suddenly appeared from the ship’s engine, starting a fire.

The fire was finally extinguished after firefighters fought for three hours. Luckily, this fire had no fatalities, but losses to the ship owner were estimated at billions of rupiah. Currently, this fire case is being investigated by Belawan Harbor Police officers.

The PT Bayur Mekar Sejahtera Plastic Seeds Factory in Sepatan, Tangerang, Burned, Suffers a Loss of IDR 1.5 Billion

The plastic pellet factory owned by PT Bayur Mekar Sejahtera on Jalan Bayur Kali, Lebak Wangi Village, Sepatan District, Tangerang Regency, reportedly experienced a fire on Saturday (30/9) afternoon. This incident caused a loss of around IDR 1.5 billion. Ujat Sudrajat, Head of the Tangerang Regency Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), said that a firefighting team was sent to the location after receiving a report about the fire at 13:28 WIB.

When officers arrived, the fire spread throughout the plastic pellet factory owned by PT Bayur Mekar Sejahtera. This condition is increasingly difficult to extinguish because water supplies are limited due to the ongoing dry season. According to information from the factory owner, the fire started from a spark that suddenly appeared on the panel or electricity meter installed on the front wall of the factory. The fire then spread to goods ready to be shipped or sold.

The high wind speed at that time made it easier for fire to spread, and the goods produced by the factory were highly flammable. Initial efforts by the company to use fire extinguishers and existing equipment were unsuccessful in extinguishing the fire. Instead, the fire grew more considerable due to strong winds.

Luckily, this incident had no fatalities or injuries, even though the factory was almost destroyed by fire. Losses are estimated at around IDR 1.5 billion. Efforts to extinguish the fire took around 2 hours, involving four firefighting units from various posts, including the Tangerang City BPBD, and assistance from other agencies.

The Fire Team Commander at BPBD Tangerang Regency, Arief, suspects this fire occurred due to an electrical short circuit at one of the substations in front of the factory.
