Police: Chemical Factory Explosion in Cilegon Caused by Reactor Pressure
Police Reveal Cause of Explosion at PT MCCI Cilegon Chemical Factory Due to Reactor Pipeline Pressure
The police in Cilegon have uncovered the cause of the explosion at the PT MCCI chemical factory. A pressure difference in the reactor pipe triggered the explosion. This incident caused six people to experience shortness of breath and trauma.
The Cilegon Police Chief, AKBP Sigit Haryono, explained, “What we can say at this time is that there was an explosion caused by pressure from the reactor in the manufacture of a polyester material (yarn) called PTA (purified terephthalic acid).” This incident occurred in Cilegon on Thursday, 24 February 2022.
The raw material for yarn production flows through the reactor pipe to the filter. The pipes carry chemicals mixed with hot water. During the flow process, the pressure in the reactor pipe increases until it finally causes an explosion.
“The substance flowed through a pipe to the filter in the reactor. Then, there was a leak in the pipe, and because of the pressure difference, the liquid consisting of hot water and the chemical was mixed, and when it was released into the air, it caused a pressure difference that caused an explosion. and pushed the pipe,” he explained.
As a result of the explosion, the reactor pipe was lifted about 40 degrees from its original position, causing the chemical liquid to gush and rain down on Pertamina’s Tanjung Gerem BBM Terminal next to the factory.
“The pipe was raised 40 degrees, and the liquid was gushing out, hitting Pertamina because it was close to Pertamina Gerem,” said Sigit.
The police have received the interim analysis results after investigating and requesting information from the company. However, the police are still investigating the leading cause of the explosion.
“After being examined by the company’s security management, it was discovered that the liquid was a chemical with a pungent odor, but according to a statement from the company, the liquid was not dangerous,” he said.
An explosion at a chemical factory in Cilegon occurred on Wednesday, February 23, at around 04.00 WIB. Six Pertamina employees became victims of the explosion, but their injuries were limited to eye irritation, shortness of breath, and trauma. The victims are still being observed to find out if other chemical reactions occur in their bodies.

8 Houses in Front of Klender Mall Burnt, Losses Estimated at IDR 300 Million
Eight houses in Jatinegara, Cakung, East Jakarta, burned down on Sunday (2/7/2023). According to East Jakarta Gulkarmat Sub-agency Head of Ops, Gatot Sulaiman, it is estimated that the losses due to the fire reached hundreds of millions of rupiah.
“It is estimated that the loss due to last night’s fire reached around IDR 300 million,” he said in a written statement on Monday (3/7/2023).
The fire occurred in a densely populated settlement on Jalan I Gusti Ngurah Rai RT 003/RW 01 and RT 002/RW 09 at around 20.18 WIB.
One of the burned-down houses belonged to a resident named Jainal Arifin, who was opposite the Ciplaz Klender Mall. According to Gatot, the fire started when a cable near Jainal’s house caught fire. A resident saw the incident and informed a trader named Oki.
“Mr. Oki was trading, and suddenly someone told him that a cable had caught fire,” Gatot said.
Soon, the fire from the cable spread to Jainal’s house. Oki immediately informed other residents about the fire. The fire department was immediately contacted at around 20.18 WIB.
Efforts to extinguish the fire were started at 20.32 WIB involving 16 units of fire engines and 80 personnel. Because the fire was quite large, it was only at 20.45 WIB that it was controlled so it would not spread to other areas.
“The cooling process could only start at 21.03 WIB. The entire blackout process was completed at 22.00 WIB, about two hours after we received the report,” Gatot said. “24 people were rescued from RT 001/RW 03 and 10 people from RT 002/RW 09. The blackout was declared over last night,” he added.

KM Farida Indah Drowns, Joint SAR Team Evacuates 6 Victims in Safe Condition
The joint SAR team consisting of rescuers from the Timika Search and Relief Office, Kaimana SAR Post, Indonesian Navy, Airud Police, and Potential SAR in Kaimana Regency, West Papua, succeeded in evacuating six survivors after the KM Farida Indah ship sank on Sunday (2 /7/2023).
The six victims who were evacuated were Dopi Sunarto (45), Baba (79), Ande Suhardi (63), Devi (52), Undi (45) and Abdul (55).
KM Farida Indah departed from Mimika, Central Papua, on June 19, 2023, to Asmat, South Papua. The ship reportedly lost contact with the Timika SAR Office on June 22, 2023.
The joint SAR team evacuated six KM Farida Indah victims after receiving a report from the MV RTM Djulpan on Saturday (1/7/2023) around 11.30 WIT. The ship contacted the Basarnas Command Center via email, and the information was forwarded to the Timika Search and Rescue Office for evacuation.
“The MV RTM Djulpan found the victim in Kaimana waters, about 59 nautical miles from the mainland of Kaimana Regency. The victim was found floating on a raft they had built,” said a written statement from the Public Relations Office of the Timika Search and Rescue Office.
After receiving the report, the Head of the Timika Search and Rescue Office, George L.M Randang, together with the Head of Timika SAR Operations and Alert, Charles Y. Batlajery, confirmed and obtained the coordinates of the MV RTM Djulpan ship via satellite telephone.
After confirming this information and obtaining the position of the MV RTM Djulpan, the joint SAR Team, under the coordination of the Danpos SAR Kaimana, Silas Wopari, immediately moved to the ship’s location. However, bad weather and high waves prevented the team from reaching the site, so they returned to Kaimana and arrived at night.
In the face of bad weather, so that the victims’ rafts would not shift, the SAR Team asked the MV RTM Djulpan to load the victims onto their ship and provide initial treatment while waiting for the SAR team to arrive at the location.
The evacuation process was finally carried out in the early hours of Sunday after the considerable distance and unfavorable weather factors hampered several attempts.
After being evacuated, the six victims were immediately handed over to the medical team and a joint team from the TNI, Polri, local government, and other SAR potentials waiting at Kaimana Port. Several ambulances have been prepared to transport two of the six victims to the Kaimana Hospital for further medical treatment.
