Liga Asuransi – The major accidents and fires that have occurred in the last few days have once again reminded us of the importance of safety and risk mitigation, both on roads and industrial environments. Starting from a fire in an empty shophouse in East Jakarta to the deadly tragedy that killed 10 teachers in Purworejo, this series of incidents shows how big the potential loss of life and property is when prevention systems fail or emergency situations are not handled properly. In this article, we summarize 7 major events that shocked the public, while reviewing risk management measures and relevant types of insurance to minimize the impact of similar events in the future.

Empty tutoring shophouse burnt down badly in East Jakarta, losses reaching hundreds of millions

Severe fires occurred again in dense areas of the capital. A shophouse (ruko) that used to be a tutoring place on Jalan Delima Raya, Klender, Duren Sawit, East Jakarta, was engulfed by a red rooster on Tuesday afternoon (14/5). Even though there were no casualties, material losses were estimated at IDR 200 million!

The incident occurred at around 12.07 WIB and was immediately reported by residents who saw smoke rising from the top floor of the shophouse. Officers from the Malaka Jaya Command Post were immediately deployed to the location. The East Jakarta Fire Handling and Rescue (Gulkarmat) Sub-Department deployed 12 fire trucks with a total of 55 personnel to conquer the fire.

“The object that burned was a former tutoring shophouse with an area of approximately 46 square meters. We managed to extinguish the fire at around 12.56 WIB,” said East Jakarta Gulkarmat Picket Officer, Mardiyanto, when met at the location.

According to Mardiyanto, the cause of the fire is strongly suspected to have come from an electrical short circuit. Surprisingly, the building had been unoccupied for almost a year.

“This building is empty, there is no activity. So we make sure there is no stove or gas involved. Most likely there is an electrical short circuit,” he said.

Monitoring in the field showed that the fire was growing rapidly, burning down the entire two-story shophouse. The large amount of flammable material in the building made the fire spread fiercely. Luckily, local residents moved quickly to help extinguish the fire so that it did not spread to other buildings.

“There were no significant obstacles during the extinguishing process because the road access was quite wide,” said Mardiyanto.

Although there were no fatalities, this incident is a reminder of the importance of cutting off electricity from empty buildings to prevent potential fire hazards.

Oven Heat Triggers Big Fire! Rattan-Wood Warehouse in Cirebon Burned to the Ground in Cirebon

A large fire destroyed a rattan and wood warehouse in Tegalsari Village, Plered District, Cirebon Regency on Saturday (10/5/2025). The fire was so fierce that the firefighting team had to work extra hours to conquer the red rooster’s fury.

Head of the Rescue and Infrastructure Division of the Cirebon Regency Fire Department, Eno Sujana, revealed that the source of the fire was thought to have come from an oven or heating device in the warehouse that overheated.

“We received the report in the morning. We suspect that the oven was too hot, producing embers which started the fire,” said Eno when interviewed at the scene.

The warehouse is known to store hundreds of logs and export-quality rattan materials—materials that are highly flammable. As a result, the fire quickly grew and spread throughout the building area.

“Because there are many flammable materials, the fire spread quickly throughout the warehouse,” he added.

The local Fire Department deployed seven fire engines to extinguish the fire. However, difficult terrain is the main obstacle. Narrow roads around the site make it difficult to maneuver large cars, slowing firefighting efforts and increasing the risk of the fire spreading to other nearby buildings.

“The fire almost spread to the building next door. Luckily we managed to contain it before it spread further. Narrow road access is the biggest challenge here,” explained Eno.

Although there were no casualties, material losses are estimated to be very large, considering that the materials in the warehouse are of high value and are intended for export. Until now, the cooling process is still ongoing and the investigative team is still investigating the exact cause of the fire.
