Liga Asuransi – A series of recent tragic accidents has once again rocked Indonesia. From the fatal tour bus crash in Bromo, the pileup in the PIK 2 area, to the crash of a PK-IWS helicopter in Central Papua that claimed the lives of all passengers and crew, deep sorrow has gripped the victims’ families and the wider community. Similar disasters have also occurred in Batam, West Jakarta, South Tangerang, and the Sunda Strait, adding to the long list of heartbreaking incidents. These incidents not only serve as reminders of the importance of safety, but also emphasize the need for proper insurance protection and risk management.

Bromo Tourist Tragedy: Brakes Fail on Jember Hospital Group Bus, Killing 8 and Injuring Dozens

A family trip to Mount Bromo for employees of Bina Sehat Hospital (RSBS) Jember turned into a tragic accident. A Hino IND’S 88 bus with license plate number P 7221 UG carrying 53 passengers was involved in a fatal accident on Jalan Raya Bromo in Boto Village, Lumbang District, Probolinggo Regency, on Sunday (September 14, 2025) at around 11:45 a.m. WIB.

The bus, driven by Al Bahri and assistant Mergi, initially ran smoothly. However, on the way home, the brakes suddenly failed on a downhill road and veered to the left. As a result, the bus veered to the right, hitting a road divider, and then hitting a motorcycle with license plate number N 2856 OE.

Death Toll and Injuries

The accident claimed eight lives, all of whom have been buried by their families, including one body buried in Madiun. Additionally, 21 people suffered moderate to severe injuries, nine of whom required surgery (eight for broken bones and one for neurosurgery due to a severe head injury).

Meanwhile, 24 other people suffered minor injuries and only required outpatient treatment and medication.

Joint Team Investigates Cause of Accident

The Indonesian National Police Traffic Corps (Korlantas Polri), along with the East Java Regional Police and the Probolinggo Police, immediately formed a joint team to investigate the cause of the brake failure. They used a Traffic Accident Analyzer (TAA), 3D radar, and drones to reconstruct the incident in detail.

“With this technology, we will know the position of the vehicle before, during, and after the incident, including the speed of the bus at the time of the accident,” said Brigadier General Faizal, Director of Law Enforcement at the Indonesian National Police Traffic Corps.

The police have also questioned several witnesses, including the surviving victims. They also expressed their appreciation to Jasa Raharja and RSBS Jember for their swift response in treating the victims.

PLN Employee Dies from Electrocution While Repairing Leaking Pipe in Batam

Another workplace accident has occurred. A PLN employee named Rudi Antoro died after being electrocuted while repairing a leaking GLP pipe at the Tanjung Uncang Combined Cycle Power Plant (PLTGU) in Batuaji, Batam, on Saturday afternoon (September 13, 2025).

Batuaji Police Chief, AKP Raden Bimo Dwi Lambang, confirmed the incident. He explained that the victim and two colleagues were working in a two-meter-deep excavation. While using a grinder, the victim suddenly received an electric shock and fell.

The victim’s panicked colleagues immediately provided first aid and took him to the nearest community health center, before finally being referred to Embung Fatimah Batam Regional Hospital.

However, according to Elin, a public relations officer at Embung Fatimah Regional Hospital, the victim was already unconscious when he arrived at the emergency room. The medical team also found burns on his right arm, suspected to be caused by sparks from using a grinder.

“Even though he received intensive care, the victim was declared dead at 15.38 WIB,” said Elin.

Police are currently investigating the incident. Several witnesses have been questioned, including the victim’s co-workers, and the equipment used has been seized.

“We are investigating whether there was any negligence in work safety procedures and ensuring that the electrical standards at the location comply with regulations,” explained AKP Bimo.

He also emphasized that the company should tighten its K3 (Occupational Safety and Health) supervision so that similar tragedies do not recur in the future.

Tragedy in the Sunda Strait! Fishing Vessel Nanjung Sari Sinks, One Person Missing

The Sunda Strait has claimed another victim. The fishing vessel Nanjung Sari reportedly sank after being hit by another vessel near Pesauran District, Serang Regency, on Friday (September 12, 2025) at 2:00 a.m. Western Indonesian Time.

This tragic incident resulted in one of the five crew members being lost, while the other four survived.

Chronology of Events

The head of the Banten National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), Al Amrad, explained that his agency received a report of the accident at 3:47 p.m. WIB from a fisherman. A rescue team from the Pandeglang SAR Alert Unit was immediately dispatched to the location with water SAR equipment.

Insurance and Risk Management Review:

Tragedies like this demonstrate the importance of financial protection for fishermen and boat owners. Some relevant types of insurance include:

  1. Ship Insurance (Marine Hull Insurance)
Protects ships from physical damage due to sinking, collisions, fires and leaks.
  2. Asuransi P&I (Protection and Indemnity)
This insurance will be very important if the leak causes environmental damage (e.g. sand spills) or disrupts the navigation of other ships.
  3. Personal Accident Insurance
Cover medical expenses if any crew member is injured.

These tragedies demonstrate that risks can strike at any time, on land, sea, or in the air. They not only cause material losses but also the immeasurable loss of life. Therefore, in addition to increasing vigilance and adherence to safety standards, protection through various types of insurance is crucial to minimize the financial impact of unforeseen disasters. Hopefully, these series of incidents serve as valuable lessons for all parties, so that prevention, preparedness, and self-protection are prioritized for the safety of all.
