Massive Fire at Wallpaper Warehouse in Muara Baru: Starting from Welding Activities, Fire Spreads Quickly
A major fire broke out at a wallpaper warehouse in the Muara Baru Harbor area, Penjaringan, North Jakarta, Friday (15/11/2024). This incident sparked panic among local residents, including Kadir (56), whose house is right behind the warehouse.
Chronology of Events
According to Kadir, activity in the warehouse had been visible since morning, including workers welding between piles of wallpaper. “Earlier at around 11.00, there were welders welding. Then on Friday, they stopped to rest for a while, but continued again after that,” he said.
However, the calm during the day turned into panic after the fire broke out at around 13.46 WIB. Kadir, who was taking a nap after Friday prayers, was awakened by his neighbor’s screams. “I was sleeping, suddenly I shouted, ‘Fire, fire!’ “When I saw it, the fire was really big,” he said, still panicked.
Fire Department Rapid Response
Luckily, the fire department arrived at the location quickly after receiving the report. Head of Operations for the North Jakarta Gulkarmat Sub-Department, Gatot Sulaeman, explained that his party deployed 26 fire trucks and 145 personnel to extinguish the fire. “The fire has been successfully extinguished, but we are still carrying out the cooling process to ensure there are no remaining flames that reignite,” explained Gatot.
Damage and Anticipation
Even though the fire did not have time to spread to the houses around the location, this fire still caused huge losses. Fortunately, the swift action of the fire brigade prevented the fire from spreading the adjacent residential area.
This fire is an important reminder of the dangers of welding without close supervision, especially in areas that store flammable materials. Residents and entrepreneurs are expected to be more vigilant in implementing safety standards, in order to prevent similar incidents in the future.
With this experience, it is important for all parties to continue to improve fire prevention measures, especially in environments that are dense with industrial activity.

Fire Devours Two Ships in Banyuwangi, Until the Ships Are Carried by the Current the Bali Strait. Fantastic Losses Reach 20 Billion
Ketapang, Banyuwangi – The usually calm Tuesday afternoon at Masami Fishing Harbor was suddenly filled with great panic. At around 12.30 WIB, fire suddenly engulfed the Dinda Jaya Motor Fishing Boat (KNM), followed by the KNM Bahtera Makmur, both of which were anchored at the pier.
Tri Winarno, the only crew member (ABK) on KNM Dinda Jaya, was responding to nature’s call when he heard shouts of “Fire, fire!” from the port cleaning officer. With his bare hands, Tri tried to extinguish the fire. However, the red rooster continued to grow, even injuring his right hand.
“I tried my best, but the fire grew too fast,” said Tri in a bitter tone.
Fire spreads to the Bali Strait
The fire that burned KNM Dinda Jaya spread to KNM Bahtera Makmur which was leaning next to it. The condition got worse when the mooring ropes of both ships caught fire. KNM Bahtera Makmur was finally swept away by the current into the middle of the Bali Strait, spreading black smoke that rose high in the air.
Head of the Banyuwangi Satpolairud, AKP I Nyoman Ardita, revealed that the total loss due to this incident reached IDR 20 billion. “Dinda’s position caught fire at the pier, while the Ark was carried by the current to the middle of the Bali Strait,” he explained.
Dramatic Blackout Effort
A joint team from KSOP Tanjung Wangi, TNI AL, Basarnas, and Satpolairud was immediately deployed. Two tugboats, TB Joyoboyo and TB Perkasa 07, tried to extinguish the fire at KNM Bahtera Makmur, while five firefighting vehicles struggled to extinguish KNM Dinda Jaya at the pier.
Luckily, there were no casualties in this fire. However, the waters of the Bali Strait were filled with thick black smoke which was visible as far as Selogiri Hamlet, Ketapang Village.
The ship has not been operational for a long time
According to Tato Handoko, the person in charge of the Masami Fishing Port, the two ships belonged to residents of Pekalongan, Central Java. The ships have been out of service for eight months and are only occasionally inspected. “This ship is just docked at our anchorage. “There are no crew members, only guards who occasionally check,” said Tato.
Until now, the exact cause of the fire is still being investigated by the authorities. Initial suspicions point to an electrical short circuit inside the ship.
Important Lessons for Ship Owners
This incident is an important reminder for fishing boat owners to ensure that the vessel’s electrical system is always in good condition, even if the vessel is not operating. Additional protection through maritime insurance is also a wise step to anticipate losses due to risks such as fire.
“We don’t know the exact cause yet. “But it is currently suspected that there was an electrical short circuit at KNM Dinda Jaya,” said Ni Putu Cahyani, Head of Sailing Safety at KSOP Tanjung Wangi.
Big Losses, Valuable Lessons
This incident is not only a tragedy for ship owners, but also a reminder that safe sailing does not stop when the ship is docked. Hopefully a quick investigation will find answers and provide valuable lessons to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Barge Crashes into Fishermen’s Nets and Fishermen Demand Compensation of IDR 20 Million for Damage to 5 Nets That Were Hit
The Regional People’s Representative Council (DPRD) of Jepara Regency held an audience with fishermen from Tubanan Village, Kembangan District, who are members of the Jepara Fishermen’s Activity Movement (PKNJ), as well as representatives of coal ship (barge) agencies, on Tuesday, December 3 2024. The hearing took place at the Jepara DPRD Building to discuss the incident of damage to fishing nets that were hit by a barge in the waters of the Jepara PLTU.
During the meeting, fishermen expressed their demands regarding the damage to the five main nets which prevented them from going to sea for the last four months. The fishermen asked for compensation of IDR 20 million to compensate for the losses they experienced. However, the ship agency only offered compensation of IDR 2.5 million, which the fishermen did not accept.
Chairman of Commission B of the Jepara Regency DPRD, Purwanto, who chaired the hearing, gave both parties one week to resolve the issue. “If there is no agreement within one week, we will call both parties again to find the best solution,” said Purwanto.
The General Chair of PKNJ, Marwiji, explained that the incident that occurred on August 6 2024 not only damaged nets, but also resulted in large losses for fishermen. “We lost our income for four months and had difficulty finding replacements. Some fishermen tried fishing, but damaged nets meant that the business was not optimal,” said Marwiji.
Member of Commission B of the Jepara Regency DPRD, Sandy, highlighted the importance of dividing operational time between fishermen and barges to avoid similar accidents in the future. “We hope that fishermen who buy new nets can keep their purchase receipts. This will make it easier if one day an incident occurs and they need to ask for compensation,” said Sandy.
This hearing still opens up opportunities for resolving problems between fishermen and ship agencies, with the hope that both can reach a fair agreement in the near future.

A major fire broke out on a barge carrying crude oil on the Lilin River, panicking residents around the riverbanks. According to information gathered from eyewitnesses, the barge, which had always been known to pass smoothly, suddenly burst into flames accompanied by thick black smoke that rose high into the sky.
“As far as we know, this barge has been operating here for a long time. We don’t know for sure what happened, suddenly fire appeared on the ship,” said one resident who did not want to be named.
The cause of the fire is still unclear, but residents suspect that the barge was carrying hundreds of tons of crude oil originating from illegal drilling in the PT Hindoli HGU area, which is located in Sungai Lilin District.

The Sungai Lilin Police Chief who confirmed this incident stated that the location of the fire was in an area close to oil drilling at HGU Hindoli, and investigations were still ongoing.
