- Abnormal Brake Pressure is the Cause of Pertamina’s Truck Failed to Brake
Jakarta – The National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) revealed the driver’s statement regarding the Pertamina truck accident on Jalan Transyogi Cibubur. Acting Head of the KNKT Road Transport Traffic Investment Sub-Committee, Ahmad Wildan, said that the driver initially did not feel any technical problems with his vehicle, everything was in normal condition.
Then, the driver began to feel the brakes not gripping a few moments after traveling from Plumpang to Cileungsi. While on the way to the Rawamangun toll road, the driver heard a hissing sound in the vehicle and then the driver pulled over to check the source of the sound he heard.
“However, nothing was found. The wind pressure on the dashboard showed 7 bar, then the driver continued the journey. Even though the dashboard wind showed 7 bar, this is unusual. While the driver on the highway never applies the brakes, the wind pressure should be full. But this is 7 bars, it means there is a leak,” said Wildan, in a press conference at the KNKT office, Central Jakarta, Tuesday (18/10/2022).
Then, while continuing the journey, the driver found it difficult to brake shortly after passing through the Cimanggis-Cibitung toll gate APILL. The driver then takes action to change lanes to the slow lane while still making efforts to brake and shifting gears to a low gear position.
“It was in 5th gear, and then tried to shift to 3rd gear but failed,” said Wildan.
When about to enter the descent, the driver tried his last attempt to pull the hand brake and trailer brake but also failed. The vehicle continued to drive. The position of the truck at that time was in the slow lane and on the left side there was a fairly high sidewalk.
“The tanker truck hit several four-wheeled vehicles in front of it. The driver reflexively turned the steering wheel to the right to escape from the vehicle he hit. However, it turned out that on the right lane there was a crowd of vehicles that stopped at the APILL CBD so that a collision with the vehicle was inevitable, ” he explained.
Wildan said by looking at the accident and the driver’s statement, that the driver did not have knowledge of understanding the brake system, carrying out pre-trip inspections and handling emergency conditions. For this reason, he suggested that the handling of emergency conditions for bus drivers and logistics be formulated as well.
“In emergency handling for pilots, trains already exist, we are for buses, trucks to train drivers, it must be done in an emergency, there is no training, what are the procedures, and so on,” he concluded.

- How could the ‘Telolet’ horn be the cause of Pertamina’s truck accident?
Jakarta – The National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) revealed why a leak in the auxiliary horn solenoid valve (telolet horn) was the cause of the Pertamina truck accident in Cibubur. This was explained by the Acting Head of the KNKT Road Transport Traffic Investment Sub-Committee, Ahmad Wildan.
He explained that the telolet or additional horn to sound louder uses wind power whose wind comes from the wind tube to brake. Now if there is a leak in the additional horn solenoid valve, the air for the brakes will automatically run out and cause the brakes to fail.
“It’s dangerous like this, he has to sound it so he can use wind power, the wind is taken from the wind tube to brake. So when there is a leak in the telolet horn, all the wind will come out of the tube, so people can’t brake. So the danger is there,” he said when met at the KNKT office, Tuesday (18/10/2022).
Wildan himself does not know whether the telolet horn policy will be removed or not. Considering that the policy regulation is in the Directorate General of Land Transportation of the Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub).
“If we eliminate it, it’s a necessity, that’s why I will return it to the Director General of Land Transportation. If I talk about technology, it’s easy to add a compressor with an air tube, trucks can run safely, the wind is safe. But that requires guidelines, the guidelines are in the Ministry of Transportation,” he explained.
Then what are the results of the KNKT’s complete investigation into the cause of the deadly accident?
For information, KNKT has revealed the results of an investigation into the cause of the Pertamina truck accident on Jalan Transyogi Cibubur, Jatirangga Village, Jatisampurna District, Bekasi City. The cause of the fatal accident was due to a failed brake and a leak from the solenoid valve of the auxiliary horn (telolet horn).
So, the Pertamina truck at the time of the incident did experience a braking failure because the air supply in the brakes was below the threshold, so it was not strong enough to brake.
“The decrease in compressed air is triggered by two things, first there is a leak in the solenoid valve of the auxiliary horn (telolet horn) and second is the non-standard travel stroke of the brake lining. ,” he explained at a press conference at the KNKT office.
Wildan said the driver began to feel the brakes were not gripping some time after traveling from Plumpang to Cileungsi.
But this is 7 bar, That means there is a leak,” he said.
