Expert Allegation: This Is What Triggered the Fire at the Plumpang Fuel Depot
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Oil and gas (oil and gas) researchers reveal a number of possible reasons behind the explosion of the Pertamina Fuel Oil Depot or Terminal (TBBM) in Plumpang, Koja, North Jakarta. The explosion occurred on Friday (3/3/2023) night, which until now is still being investigated.
Main Researcher at the Research and Development Center for Oil and Gas 1985-2015, Oberlin Sidjib, explained the possible causes of the explosion at the Plumpang Depot. Oberlin said several factors could trigger the explosion at TBBM Plumpang.
One of the factors that can cause an explosion is the volatile characteristics of fuel oil (BBM). Followed by mixed oxygen can cause a fire.
“We’ll look at the lightning factor (which was conveyed by the residents), let alone the rumor that there was refueling. Now we know the characteristics of gasoline fuel are volatile, so as a result of this evaporation, the air mixes with the air and if there is lightning this is the problem,” said Oberlin to CNBC Indonesia in the ‘Profit’ program, Monday (6/3/2023).
Indeed, previously there were rumors that when the incident occurred, local residents heard a sound like thunder. Followed before the explosion, at that time the weather in the area was indeed rainy. At the same time, about 30 minutes or 20 minutes before the explosion occurred, there was a strong smell of petrol.
That way, Oberlin revealed that there was a possibility that the filling of fuel and the presence of lightning could cause an explosion and even a fire.
Apart from that, Oberlin also revealed that the presence of exposed electrical wires is also a way to start a fire, causing a fire. So according to him, monitoring of equipment including pipes and electrical cables there must always be done.
“We also have to see if there is any maintenance on the pipes or the fuel filling system at the depot is continuously monitored. Because it can happen if there are electrical cables too, yes, if something opens like that, it can also cause problems,” he said.
Meanwhile, he also alluded to the matter of residents’ settlements which are considered very close to TBBM Plumpang which can also trigger problems. Which Oberlin mentioned in the daily activities of residents relying on fire for cooking, smoking and other activities.
So, he assessed, if there was a pipe leak at that time, it could have been ignited by residents’ activities involving fire in the settlement. “As we know, the characteristic of our fuel is that it is easy to volatilize and it flies meaning into the air. So if this leak occurs, if the settlement is very close, then the settlement has fire, cooking, smoking, and so on, this is a problem,” he concluded.
Pertamina Corporate Communication Vice President, Fadjar Djoko Santoso stated that the Plumpang Depot, which had experienced a fire, had been operating 100% since Saturday morning (4/3/2023).
“It has been operating 100% since Saturday morning, supply and distribution are normal,” said Fadjar to CNBC Indonesia, Monday (6/3/2023).
Fadjar also could not explain why the Plumpang Depot, Pertamina could experience a fire. What is clear, his party supports the steps taken by the Indonesian National Police to conduct an investigation. “We are waiting for the results of the investigation from the police,” said Fadjar.
Previously, after the severe fire at the Oil Fuel Depot or Terminal (TBBM), Plumpang, Koja, North Jakarta owned by PT Pertamina (Persero), the government, especially Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) provided options in this regard.
At least, President Jokowi provided two options for solutions to the fire problem at the Pertamina Plumpang Depot. This was stated by the President during his visit to the Evacuation Post in the Plumpang Children’s Home Integrated Public Room (RPTRA), North Jakarta, Sunday (5/3/2023).
The two solution options mentioned by Jokowi include relocating residents around the Pertamina Plumpang Depot or moving the Pertamina Plumpang Fuel Oil Terminal (TBBM). “It could be that Plumpang was shifted to reclamation or the residents were shifted, relocated,” he said.
Jokowi emphasized that the Pertamina Depot is a dangerous zone that must be far from residential areas. Therefore, there should not be residential areas near fuel depots.
If residents are relocated, then said Jokowi, the area they are currently living in will become the Pertamina Depo buffer zone. The President asked his staff to make a quick decision whether the residents were being relocated or the Pertamina Depot was being moved.
“This will be decided in a day or two by Pertamina & the Governor of DKI so that the solution becomes clear. But indeed this zone should be a water zone,” he added.
According to Jokowi, there must be facilities that protect these vital objects, because the goods stored there are very dangerous when they are close to the community, especially to residential areas.

Accidents in a Row at North Jakarta Toll Gate, Families of the Dead Ask the Police to Investigate Trailer Truck Owners
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The family of the Alphard car driver who died in a series of accidents at the Bridge toll gate, North Jakarta asked the police to investigate the owner of the trailer truck that crashed into the Alphard.
Brian Nelson, brother-in-law of Sonny Bunyamin Susanto, 33, who died in an accident, said that his brother died at the scene due to an accident caused by a truck’s brake failure.
The successive accident occurred on Thursday, March 2, 2023 at 23.30 WIB. Sonny drove the Alphard Silver car with police number B 1110 H along with 5 other passengers.
“At that time the position of the Alphard car was stopped to queue for the exit of the Tiga Highway Toll Road. At that time, the toll road traffic was very congested,” Nelson told Tempo, Monday, February 6, 2023.
From the direction of Grogol towards the Tiga Bridge toll gate, there was a trailer truck with police number D 9413 AB that was speeding and had brake failure. Then, crash into the vehicle in front of it. One of them hit the Alphard Silver car. As a result of the accident the car was badly damaged.
“All the families of the victims really hope that cases and incidents of this accident are investigated strictly and thoroughly regarding who owns the truck,” he said.
The family suspects that the condition of the truck is not proper but is still being used for transportation.
“The family really hopes for justice and responsibility in this case. So there is a comprehensive explanation of how the truck can still be used for transportation suspected of being an exporter container but the condition of the truck is not roadworthy or not properly maintained,” said Brian.
Brian said his family would take legal action. The news that the victim died in hospital was also denied.
“Strictly clarify that the news circulating so far is not true and does not match the facts that occurred at the scene. News of the money circulating in the media explains that there were no casualties,” he said.

At least, there were five residences consisting of a workshop, two restaurants, a coffee shop, and a place for servicing electronic goods that were burnt. The semi-permanent residence was only a wall that was scorched by the fire. The fire incident was also witnessed by a victim named Choirul Anan (23).
Before the fire started, the electricity had gone out. At first he thought the electricity was only going out temporarily. “We think it’s just going to reduce the electricity because this often happens. That is, when the electricity goes down, we will increase it again (the fuse),” said Choirul when met by Kompas.com at the fire location, Tuesday.
Choirul said the fire started on the second floor of a wrong building. Then, the fire quickly spread to the building next door. The fire then grew very quickly. Choirul who was at the scene said that the red flame devoured five semi-permanent buildings in a matter of 2-3 minutes.
“Yes, the name of the material is flammable, so from a small fire to a flare, everything happens very quickly,” he said. Had to look for valuables. Meanwhile, another victim, Amanah (47), admitted that she was cooking when the incident occurred.
At that time, Amanah said the electricity went out because the miniature circuit breaker (MCB) fuse went down. “Five minutes later, when my customer was drinking coffee in front he said ‘fire on fire’. It turned out that the fire was already big on the floor above,” said Amanah.
Amanah said the fire occurred around 07.45 WIB. After learning that his house was on fire, Amanah rushed to his room to look for valuables. “I went to my room looking for my wallet, because I was panicking, I only saved my son’s letters and diploma,” said Amanah.
When asked about the alleged fire, Choirul suspected it was due to a short circuit. “The fire came from above the workshop, my room was above. The shop over here was screaming and I wanted to go to the upstairs room. Suddenly the fire had reached the tire repair shop,” said Parmini. “Then I didn’t go up, the fire had already spread to the bottom, I couldn’t save anything,” he continued.
At that time, Parmini was with her husband on the floor that was used as a food stall. Knowing there was a fire, they rushed to save themselves.
